About the Domain Transfer In API

The Domain Transfer In API allows you to check whether a domain can be transferred to Wix from another registrar before the transfer starts. Validating up front lets you show the Wix user what's blocking the transfer instead of having it fail later.

With the Domain Transfer In API, you can:

  • Validate whether a domain meets the requirements for transferring to Wix.
  • Validate an authorization code from the domain's current registrar.

Transfer requirements

A domain can be transferred to Wix only when it meets all of these requirements:

  • The domain's TLD supports transfers to Wix.
  • The domain isn't a premium domain.
  • The domain isn't already registered with Wix.
  • No transfer to Wix is already in progress for the domain.

Validate Domain Transferability checks all of these requirements in a single call. Each requirement the domain doesn't meet is returned as a separate violation, so the response can contain several violations at once.

To transfer the domain, the Wix user also needs an authorization code from the current registrar. Call Validate Authorization Code to confirm the code is valid for the domain.

Before you begin

It's important to note the following points before starting to code:

  • Both methods return validation problems as violations in a successful response, not as errors. An empty violations list means the domain passed every check.
  • Validation reflects the domain's status at the time of the call. A domain that passes validation can still fail to transfer if its status changes, so validate shortly before starting the transfer.
  • Subdomains aren't supported. A leading www. is removed and the domain name is converted to lowercase before validation.

Use cases

Terminology

  • Authorization code: A code from the domain's current registrar that authorizes transferring the domain. Also known as an EPP code or transfer code.
  • Premium domain: A domain that the registry prices above the standard rate for its TLD.
  • TLD: Top-level domain. The last segment of a domain name, such as .com, .net, or .co.uk.
  • Violation: A transfer requirement that the domain or authorization code doesn't meet.
