About the Google Business Profile APIs

A Google Business Profile is the listing a business has on Google Search and Google Maps: its name and address, opening hours, photos, customer reviews, and the attributes that tell customers whether it delivers, has step-free access, or takes reservations. It's often the first thing a customer sees, and it's usually maintained in Google's own tools, away from the site the business already manages on Wix.

The Google Business Profile APIs close that gap. They let your app link a Wix site to the business's Google account, import the locations that account manages, and then read and update those listings without the site owner leaving your app. You can also read back how the profile is performing: how customers found it, what they searched for, and whether Google considers it healthy.

These APIs are for apps that manage a merchant's online presence. If your app already handles a business's site, storefront, or marketing, they let it manage the Google listing alongside everything else.

The Google Business Profile APIs include:

  • Connection: Links a Wix site to a Google account and revokes that link. Start here. The other APIs read and write a Google account's data, so they need a connection before they can do anything.
  • Locations: Imports the business locations reachable through the connection, then manages them. This is the largest of the three and covers location details, reviews and replies, photos, attributes, verification, admins, and performance data.
  • Media Upload: Queues a whole set of photo changes for one location and applies them gradually in the background. Google accepts only about 10 edits per minute per profile, so a site owner saving a full gallery can't be served by immediate writes. Use this when there's more than a handful of photos, and the Locations API's photo methods when there's one.

Before you begin

Everything here depends on a connection. Call Get Connect URL on the Connection API, send the site owner to the URL it returns so they can grant access to their Google account, and only then call the Locations API. Without a connection there are no locations to import and nothing to read.

One connection covers one Wix site. A site owner who manages several Google accounts picks which one to connect, and Get Connection reports what a site is currently linked to.

Terminology

  • Business Profile: the listing a business has on Google Search and Maps. Google owns this data, and these APIs read and write it on the business's behalf.
  • Location: one place of business on a profile. A business with three branches has three locations, each with its own address, hours, photos, and reviews.
    • Imported location: a location that has been brought into the Wix site, so the site can manage it. Locations exist on Google whether or not they've been imported.
    • Service-area business: a business that travels to its customers rather than serving them at an address, like a plumber. Google treats these differently, and some methods need a service area rather than a storefront address.
  • Verification: Google's process for confirming that the business is what it says it is, usually by postcard, phone, or email. An unverified location is limited in what it can publish.
  • Voice of Merchant: Google's own summary of whether a profile is healthy, needs verification, or has an ownership conflict. Read it before assuming an update failed for some other reason.
  • Attribute: a structured fact about a location, such as whether it offers delivery. Which attributes a location supports depends on its category, so read the available attributes before writing them.
