About the Bing Webmaster Tools APIs

The Bing Webmaster Tools APIs manage a Wix site's presence in Bing Webmaster Tools: from connecting a Microsoft account, through adding and verifying the site, to submitting its sitemap and reading Bing's processing details.

The Bing Webmaster Tools APIs include:

  • BWT Connection: Connect a Wix site to Bing Webmaster Tools by linking a Microsoft account. The authorization runs in the browser and the credentials are stored server-side, so the connection is established without handling tokens.
  • BWT Site Readiness: Act on Bing Webmaster Tools through the connected account. Check which setup step is missing, add the site to the account, verify its ownership, submit its sitemap, and read the submitted sitemaps.

The two APIs compose in order: connect first with the BWT Connection API, then run the setup methods of the BWT Site Readiness API. Until the site is connected, Add Site, Verify Site, Get Verification Token, Submit Sitemap, List Sitemaps, and Get Sitemap fail with a MISSING_TOKEN error, and Get Site Readiness returns NOT_READY with NOT_CONNECTED.

Before you begin

It's important to note the following points before starting to code:

  • The site must be published, have a connected domain, and allow search-engine indexing. The connection flow and the setup methods that write to Bing Webmaster Tools fail with FAILED_PRECONDITION until the site is ready.
  • Calls that reach Bing are subject to Bing's throttling, and Bing-side failures surface as retryable errors: BING_QUOTA_EXCEEDED after the throttling window, and BING_UNAVAILABLE with backoff.

Terminology

  • Connection: The link between a Wix site and a Microsoft account, held as Bing credentials that are stored server-side and never returned.
  • Site readiness: The site's standing in Bing Webmaster Tools setup: READY when setup is complete, or NOT_READY with the first blocking step.
  • Verification token: The value of the msvalidate.01 meta tag that proves ownership of the site to Bing. Wix places it on the site.
