# About the Tag Suggestions API

The Tag Suggestions API generates AI-powered SEO text for a site's pages: title tags, description tags, image alt text, and heading-level corrections. Each call returns ready-to-use suggestions that you can show to a site owner or apply to the page.

With the Tag Suggestions API, you can:

- Generate title tag and description tag suggestions for a page from its name, type, topic, and primary keyword.
- Generate alt text for the images of Wix-managed items, such as store products or blog posts, one image at a time or up to 20 in a single call.
- Check a page's heading hierarchy and get the heading level each heading should have.

Each image is identified by its Wix media URL and by the ID and type of the item it belongs to, and the item's stored SEO data gives the AI context about the image. Alt text can't be generated for an arbitrary image URL.

## Before you begin

It's important to note the following points before starting to code:

- Suggestions are generated by AI for each call and aren't stored. There's no ID to retrieve them by later, and calling the same method twice may return different suggestions.
- A call may return fewer suggestions than the documented maximum. The AI output is filtered before it's returned: duplicates, texts outside the target length, and texts that leave out the primary keyword are dropped. If no suggestion passes the filter, generation is retried once before the call fails with `GENERATION_FAILED`.
- Suggestions are generated in the site's language. You can't request a different language.
- Each method is limited to 5 requests per second per calling user, and each call has a time budget of 60 seconds. Calls over the rate limit are rejected, so retry them after a short delay.
- Free-text fields, such as `pageContent`, `topic`, and `toneOfVoice`, are sent to the AI model and written to service logs. Send page content only, and don't include personal data.
- Alt text is generated for images hosted on Wix media domains only, such as `static.wixstatic.com`. Other image URLs are rejected with an `INVALID_ARGUMENT` error.
- Generate Heading Structure Suggestions must be called with a [Wix user identity](portalId::3aad3f6f-49bb-4d59-8817-0844f1da8b9fresourceId::c75c3d45-f58e-4896-a886-8007c2b48079*fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/articles/authentication/about-identities), for example an app acting on behalf of a signed-in site owner. It reads the page's title through the site's accessibility analysis, which runs as the user, so calls made with an API key fail. The other methods accept API keys.

## Terminology

- **Title tag**: The page's `<title>` element, shown as the headline of a search result. Suggestions aim for 45 to 65 characters, which displays fully in search results.
- **Description tag**: The page's meta description, shown under the headline of a search result. Suggestions aim for 130 to 165 characters.
- **Alt text**: A short phrase that describes what an image depicts. It's used by screen readers, shown when the browser can't display the image, and read by search engines to understand what's on the page.
- **Heading structure**: The hierarchy of a page's H1 to H6 headings. A good structure has a single H1, no skipped levels, and headings that describe the content below them.
- **Page type**: The kind of page a suggestion is for, such as a homepage, blog post, or product page. It helps the AI phrase the suggestion for the page's purpose.
- **Item type**: Identifier of the kind of Wix item a page or image belongs to, such as `STATIC_PAGE_V2` for a regular site page or `STORES_PRODUCT` for a store product.
- **Primary keyword**: The search term the page targets. When you pass one, suggestions try to feature it.

# Tag Suggestions: Sample Flows

This article presents possible use cases and corresponding sample flows that you can support. It provides a useful starting point as you plan your implementation.

## Suggest title and description tags in an SEO editor

Your app has an SEO panel where a site owner edits a page's title tag and description tag. Instead of leaving the fields blank, the panel offers AI-generated texts the owner can pick from.

To suggest title and description tags:

1. Determine the page's name, its primary keyword if the owner set one, and its kind. Map the kind to a `pageType` value, for example `PRODUCT_PAGE` for a store product page or `BLOG_POST` for a blog post. Leave `pageType` out for a regular site page.
1. Call [Generate Title Suggestions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-management/seo/tag-suggestions-v1/generate-title-suggestions) with `pageName`, `pageType`, and `primaryKeyword`. Present the returned `tagSuggestions.suggestions` to the owner. They're ordered best match first.
1. Call [Generate Description Suggestions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-management/seo/tag-suggestions-v1/generate-description-suggestions) with `pageName`, `topic`, and `pageType`. Add the optional hints you have, such as `toneOfVoice`, `businessType`, `businessLocation`, or the page's text in `pageContent`. Present the returned suggestions.
1. When the owner picks a suggestion, apply it to the page's title tag or description tag in your SEO settings. If the owner wants more options, call the method again. Each call generates fresh suggestions.

## Add alt text to a store's product images

A store owner has products with images that have no alt text. Your app fills the gaps in bulk, so the images are accessible and understood by search engines.

To add alt text to a store's product images:

1. For each product, collect its image URLs from Wix media, such as `https://static.wixstatic.com/media/...`, and the product ID. Give each image your own reference `id`, such as the image's position or media ID.
1. Call [Bulk Generate Alt Text Suggestions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-management/seo/tag-suggestions-v1/bulk-generate-alt-text-suggestions) with `itemType` set to `STORES_PRODUCT` and up to 20 `images`, each with its `id`, `url`, and the product ID as `parentItemId`. Split larger sets into calls of 20.
1. Go through `results`. For each result with `success` set to `true`, take the first entry of `suggestions` as the best match, or let the owner choose from the list. `failureCount` tells you how many images got no alt text.
1. For each result with `success` set to `false`, call [Generate Alt Text Suggestions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-management/seo/tag-suggestions-v1/generate-alt-text-suggestions) with that image alone to retry it.
1. Apply the chosen alt text to each image in your store's product settings.

## Fix a page's heading structure

Your app checks a page's accessibility and SEO. It found headings that skip a level or a page with 2 H1 headings, and wants to propose the correct level for each heading.

To fix a page's heading structure:

1. Collect the page's heading elements in the order they appear on the page. For each heading, keep its raw HTML including the tag, for example `<h3>Contact us</h3>`, and your own reference `id` for the element. If the page is split into sections, set `sectionId` on each heading so the AI keeps one hierarchy per section.
1. Call [Generate Heading Structure Suggestions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-management/seo/tag-suggestions-v1/generate-heading-structure-suggestions) with the `headings`, the `pageId`, and the page's `itemType`, for example `STATIC_PAGE_V2` for a regular site page.
1. Go through `suggestions`. Each entry names a heading by the `headingId` you sent and gives its `currentTag` and `proposedTag`. Change the element's tag to `proposedTag`. A `proposedTag` of `P` means the text shouldn't be a heading at all.
1. If `suggestions` is empty, the heading structure is already correct and nothing needs to change.
