## Reservation lifecycle

Understanding the reservation lifecycle is essential for effective implementation:

1. When a visitor selects tickets, reservations start in `PENDING` status with an automatic expiration time (typically 5 to 30 minutes based on [event settings](portalId::d1972c09-74e2-4d36-a6f2-54e3310d4ad9resourceId::68966736-ba7d-41f5-b0d3-f9b22ad38826*fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/events/events-v3/introduction), the `reservationDurationInMinutes` field).
2. The system holds tickets exclusively for the visitor who proceeds to checkout. Other visitors can't purchase these specific tickets.
3. Reservations resolve in one of several ways:
    - **Confirmed**: Payment completion changes the status to `CONFIRMED`, securing the tickets permanently.
    - **Canceled**: Manual cancellation or payment failure changes the status to `CANCELED_MANUALLY` or `CANCELED`. Tickets are immediately released back to the available inventory.
    - **Expired**: Automatic expiration after the time limit changes the status to `EXPIRED`. Tickets are immediately released back to the available inventory.

## Terminology

- **Ticket Reservation**: A temporary hold on specific tickets for a limited time period during checkout.
- **Ticket Definition**: The template or type of ticket (for example, 'General Admission', 'VIP') defined at the event level. - **Line Item**: An individual entry in a reservation representing tickets of the same type, price, and seating.
- **Expiration Time**: The date and time when a `PENDING` reservation will automatically expire and release tickets.
- **Guest Price**: Custom pricing set by customers for 'pay-what-you-want' or donation-style tickets.
- **Pricing Option**: Different price tiers for the same ticket type (for example, 'Early Bird', 'Regular').
- **Seat Assignment**: Specific seat locations for assigned seating events (section, row, seat number).
- **Service Fee**: Additional fees applied by Wix for payment processing and platform usage.

# Ticket Reservations API: Sample Flows

This article presents possible use cases and corresponding sample flows that you can support. It provides a useful starting point as you plan your implementation.

## Reserve tickets and process payments

This flow demonstrates the complete ticket purchasing process from initial reservation through payment completion. It shows how to temporarily hold tickets while site visitors complete their purchase, ensuring inventory is protected without overselling.

To reserve tickets and process payments:

1. After the site visitor clicks the checkout button, call [Create Ticket Reservation](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/events/ticket-reservations/create-ticket-reservation) with the site visitor's ticket selections.
1. Save the returned reservation `id`, `eventId` and `expirationDate` fields from the response.
1. Call [Checkout](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/events/orders/checkout) to checkout the reserved tickets. This method redirects the site visitor to the Wix checkout. The site visitor completes payment through [Wix Payments](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-management/payments/introduction). There might be 3 outcomes:
    - The reservation status automatically updates to `CONFIRMED` upon successful payment. You can verify this by calling [Get Ticket Reservation](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/events/ticket-reservations/get-ticket-reservation). 
    - If payment isn't completed before the expiration time, the reservation automatically changes to `EXPIRED` status and tickets are released back to inventory.
    - If a site visitor decides not to complete their purchase, you can manually cancel their reservation to immediately release the tickets:
        1. Ensure the reservation is in `PENDING` or `CONFIRMED` status.
        1. Call [Cancel Ticket Reservation](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/events/ticket-reservations/cancel-ticket-reservation).
        1. The reservation status changes to `CANCELED_MANUALLY` and tickets are immediately available for other customers to purchase.
