# About the Promotions API

The Promotions API allows you to create and manage visual banners displayed on store category pages, including their product gallery sections. Promotions can highlight sales, seasonal offers, or featured content and link site visitors to relevant pages.

With the Promotions API, you can:

- Create, update, and delete promotional banners.
- Assign promotions to store categories, with optional inheritance to subcategories.
- Retrieve the effective promotions for a category, accounting for position and conflict resolution.
- Search and query promotions with filtering, sorting, and free-text search.
- Manage promotions in bulk.

## Category assignments

Each promotion can be assigned to one or more [categories](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/stores/catalog-v3/categories). Within each category, promotions are ordered by `position`, starting from 1. You can also set `appliedToSubcategories` to `true` for a category assignment, which makes the promotion appear in that category's subcategories with the same position.

When multiple enabled promotions apply at the same position in a category (either directly or through subcategory inheritance), the conflict is resolved based on the promotion's activation date. The activation date is the later of the promotion's creation date and the date it was last enabled. The promotion with the most recent activation date takes precedence.

## Promotion media

Every promotion requires a media image. You can set the image using a Wix Media Manager file ID, or with an external URL. When you set media with a URL, Wix Media Manager imports the image asynchronously, and the promotion stays disabled until the import completes. If the import fails, the promotion's media is cleared and the promotion stays disabled. Once media is set on a promotion, it can be replaced but not removed.

## Promotion tags

Assign public or private tags to promotions to organize and filter them. Use [Bulk Update Promotion Tags](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/stores/catalog-v3/promotions-v3/bulk-update-promotion-tags) to assign or unassign tags on specific promotions, or [Bulk Update Promotion Tags By Filter](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/stores/catalog-v3/promotions-v3/bulk-update-promotion-tags-by-filter) to update tags asynchronously on all promotions matching a filter.

## Limitations

- A site can have up to 100 promotions.

## Terminology

# Promotions: Sample Flows

This article presents possible use cases and corresponding sample flows that you can support. It provides a useful starting point as you plan your implementation.

## Sync promotions to an external content management system

If a site owner manages promotional content in an external system, you can periodically export new and updated promotions to keep both systems in sync.

To sync promotions to an external system:

1. For the initial sync after the app is installed, call [Query Promotions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/stores/catalog-v3/promotions-v3/query-promotions) to retrieve all existing promotions.

1. Upload the returned promotions to the external system.

1. Save the current date and time to use as a reference for subsequent syncs.

1. For each subsequent sync, call [Query Promotions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/stores/catalog-v3/promotions-v3/query-promotions) and filter for promotions updated since the last sync:

    ```json

1. Upload any new or updated promotions to the external system.

1. Repeat steps 4 and 5 at your desired interval. You can allow the site admin to configure the sync frequency through your app.

## Assign seasonal promotions to multiple categories

When a site owner runs a seasonal sale, you can create promotions and assign them to multiple categories at once using the bulk API.

To assign seasonal promotions to multiple categories:

1. Prepare an array of promotion objects, each with a `name`, `media`, and the `categories` to assign to. Set `appliedToSubcategories` to `true` if the promotion should also appear in subcategories. For example:

1. Call [Bulk Create Promotions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/stores/catalog-v3/promotions-v3/bulk-create-promotions) with the array and set `returnEntity` to `true` to get the created promotions in the response.

1. Verify that the promotions were created successfully by checking the `bulkActionMetadata.totalSuccesses` field in the response.

1. To verify how the promotions appear for a specific category, call [Resolve Promotions](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/business-solutions/stores/catalog-v3/promotions-v3/resolve-promotions) with the category ID. The response returns the effective promotions sorted by position.

    > **Note:** When media is set with a URL, Wix Media Manager imports the image asynchronously, and the promotion becomes enabled only after the import completes successfully. Until then, Resolve Promotions doesn't return the promotion.
