# About App Tools

[App Tools](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/extensions-framework/backend-extensions/app-tools.md) extensions let your app expose custom tools that [Aria](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/ai-the-wix-platform/about-aria.md) can discover and invoke on behalf of Wix users. When a Wix user chats with Aria about something your app's tools can do, Aria calls your tools with the relevant input to take action or get a response it can use to provide an informed answer. Any functionality your app can perform, you can expose as a tool, including retrieving data, running workflows, completing actions, and calling 3rd-party APIs and services.

## Extensions configuration

To expose a tool, you must set up an App Tools extension and a Tools Provider [service plugin](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/extensions-framework/backend-extensions/service-plugins.md).

- **App Tools extension:** Declares the tools your app exposes, including each tool's name, description, and optional request and response schemas.
- **Tools Provider service plugin:** The runtime handler Wix calls when Aria invokes a tool.

## App Tools across development paths

A [Wix-managed app](https://dev.wix.com/docs/build-apps/develop-your-app/develop-an-app-with-the-cli/supported-extensions/backend/app-tools/add-app-tools-extensions-with-the-wix-cli.md) and a Wix-managed [headless project](https://dev.wix.com/docs/go-headless/wix-managed-headless/full-integration-astro/extensions/backend/app-tools/add-app-tools-extensions-with-the-wix-cli.md) each generate the App Tools extension file through the CLI. You must also set up a Tools Provider service plugin and implement its [`runTool()`](https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/app-management/app-tools/tools-provider-v1/run-tool.md) handler. See [Service Plugin Extension Files and Code](https://dev.wix.com/docs/backend-extensions/service-plugins/service-plugin-extension-files-and-code.md) for the generated files and handler code. [Self-managed projects](https://dev.wix.com/docs/build-apps/develop-your-app/develop-a-self-managed-app/supported-extensions/about-self-managed-app-extensions.md#backend-extensions) configure both extensions in the app dashboard and implement `runTool()` on their own backend.
