# About App Skills Extensions

App Skills extensions let you declare skills for [Aria](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/ai-the-wix-platform/about-aria.md), the Wix AI assistant. A skill is a named set of reference documentation that guides Aria through a task. In Wix-managed projects and self-managed apps, a skill can also list [App Tools](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/extensions-framework/backend-extensions/app-tools.md) that Aria may call.

Use an App Skills extension when you want Aria to handle a task consistently. For example, you can tell Aria to:

- **Follow a checklist:** Walk the Wix user through a set of steps you define, in the order you define.
- **Complete a task across services:** Collect information from the Wix user, use it in a service your app connects to, and report the result back.

## App Skills configuration

To expose a skill, you must set up an App Skills extension. The extension declares the skills your project offers.

A skill contains the following components:

- **Slug:** Identifies the skill.
- **Description:** Describes to Aria when to use the skill.
- **Guidelines:** Instructs Aria how to perform the task.

You can also add tags, example requests, and [App Tools](#add-tools-to-a-skill).

How you set up the extension depends on your project type and development path. Learn more about [App Skills across development paths](#app-skills-across-development-paths).

## How Aria uses your skills

When a Wix user installs your app on a site, or your project declares its own skills, Aria uses them in the following flow:

1. A Wix user sends Aria a request.
2. Aria retrieves the site's skills with [List App Skills](https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/app-management/app-skills/list-app-skills.md). Each skill's description, tags, and example requests help Aria decide which skill to use.
3. When Aria chooses a skill, it retrieves its guidelines with [Get App Skill](https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/app-management/app-skills/get-app-skill.md).
4. Aria follows the guidelines to complete the task. If the skill lists tools from the app's App Tools extension, Aria invokes them.

## Add tools to a skill

In Wix-managed projects and self-managed apps, you can package App Skills and [App Tools](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/extensions-framework/backend-extensions/app-tools.md) together. App Tools expose your app's functionality to Aria, so Aria can perform actions in your project. You can configure a skill to include the App Tools that Aria may need to complete a task.

For example, an invoicing app connects to a 3rd-party invoicing service and exposes an app tool that creates an invoice. A skill tells Aria to collect the customer's details from the Wix user, call the tool to create the invoice, and send the invoice number back.

> **Note:** Studio Two sites don't support adding App Tools to App Skills.

## App Skills across development paths

The development path determines how you add App Skills:

- **Sites:**
  - **Studio Two:** You add App Skills directly as a backend extension from the Wix Extension Builder. See [Add an App Skills Extension in Studio Two](https://dev.wix.com/docs/studio-two/code-your-site/build-a-custom-backend/app-skills/add-an-app-skills-extension-in-studio-two.md).
  - **Wix Studio and Wix Editor:** Don't add App Skills directly. To give Aria skills on a site, create a private app that declares the App Skills extension, and install that app on the site.
- **Wix-managed headless projects:**
  - **Full Wix integration with Astro:** Add App Skills as a backend extension through the CLI. The CLI scaffolds the extension. See the Go Headless article [Add App Skills Extensions with the CLI](https://dev.wix.com/docs/go-headless/wix-managed-headless/full-integration-astro/extensions/backend/app-skills/add-app-skills-extensions-with-the-wix-cli.md).
  - **Other frameworks:** Don't support App Skills directly.
- **Wix-managed apps:** Add App Skills through the CLI. The CLI scaffolds the extension. See the Build Apps article [Add App Skills Extensions with the CLI](https://dev.wix.com/docs/build-apps/develop-your-app/develop-an-app-with-the-cli/supported-extensions/backend/app-skills/add-app-skills-extensions-with-the-wix-cli.md).
- **Self-managed apps:** Configure the App Skills extension in the app dashboard. See [App Skills Extension Config](https://dev.wix.com/docs/api-reference/app-management/app-skills/app-skills-extension-config.md) in the API reference. See also the Build Apps article [Add Self-Managed App Skills Extensions](https://dev.wix.com/docs/build-apps/develop-your-app/develop-a-self-managed-app/supported-extensions/backend-extensions/app-skills/add-self-managed-app-skills-extensions-in-the-app-dashboard.md).
