# About Dashboard Menu Plugins

A [dashboard menu plugin](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/extensions-framework/dashboard-extensions/dashboard-menu-plugins.md) is an item in a menu on a dashboard page built by Wix, such as the **More Actions** menu on a CRM contact's page. When a Wix user clicks it, it navigates to a dashboard page or opens a dashboard modal. In Studio Two you add one from the **Code** tab through the **Wix Extension Builder**, so you can open your own dashboard pages and modals from the business solution pages the site uses.

For when to use a menu plugin versus a page, a modal, or a dashboard plugin, see [Dashboard Menu Plugins](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/extensions-framework/dashboard-extensions/dashboard-menu-plugins.md).

## Anatomy of a dashboard menu plugin

A dashboard menu plugin in a Studio Two project is a single configuration file. It declares the menu item's ID, label, slot, icon, and what happens when it's clicked. For the full set of fields, see [Dashboard Menu Plugin Extension Files and Code](https://dev.wix.com/docs/dashboard-extensions/dashboard-menu-plugins/dashboard-menu-plugin-extension-files-and-code.md).

A menu plugin has no code of its own. The page or modal it opens holds the code, so you usually build the target first, often a [dashboard modal](https://dev.wix.com/docs/studio-two/code-your-site/build-a-custom-dashboard/dashboard-modals/about-dashboard-modals.md) or [dashboard page](https://dev.wix.com/docs/studio-two/code-your-site/build-a-custom-dashboard/dashboard-pages/about-dashboard-pages.md) in the same project. For that workflow end to end, see [Build a Dashboard Menu Plugin in Studio Two](https://dev.wix.com/docs/studio-two/code-your-site/build-a-custom-dashboard/dashboard-menu-plugins/build-a-dashboard-menu-plugin-in-studio-two.md).

## How dashboard menu plugins are used

- You add the menu plugin from the **Code** tab through the **Wix Extension Builder**, which puts its file in your site project and registers it.
- You choose the menu slot the item appears in. Each slot belongs to a page of a Wix business solution, such as Wix CRM or Wix Stores, so the item appears only on a site where that business solution is installed.
- You choose what happens on click: navigate to a dashboard page, or open a dashboard modal.
- When a Wix user clicks the item, the slot passes data from the host page to the target, such as the ID of the contact in view. The target reads it with the Dashboard SDK.
