# About Dashboard Modals

A [dashboard modal](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/extensions-framework/dashboard-extensions/dashboard-modals.md) is a dialog that opens over a dashboard page. In Studio Two you add a modal from the **Code** tab through the **Wix Extension Builder**, so you can collect input or confirm an action without leaving the current page.

For when to use a modal versus a page or another dashboard type, and for identity, permissions, and the APIs you call from the modal, see [Dashboard Modals](https://dev.wix.com/docs/overview/extensions-framework/dashboard-extensions/dashboard-modals.md).

## Anatomy of a dashboard modal

A dashboard modal in a Studio Two project is a configuration file, a shared config, and the React code that implements it:

- The **modal code** is the React component that renders in the dashboard.
- The **configuration file** declares the modal's ID, title, size, and component path. For the full set of fields, see [Dashboard Modal Extension Files and Code](https://dev.wix.com/docs/dashboard-extensions/dashboard-modals/dashboard-modal-extension-files-and-code.md).

You generate the files first, then edit the React component to match the look and behavior you need. For that workflow end to end, see [Build a Dashboard Modal in Studio Two](https://dev.wix.com/docs/studio-two/code-your-site/build-a-custom-dashboard/dashboard-modals/build-a-dashboard-modal-in-studio-two.md).

## How dashboard modals are used

- You add the modal from the **Code** tab through the **Wix Extension Builder**, which puts its files in your site project and registers it.
- After you publish the site, a Wix user opens the modal from a dashboard page, a menu plugin, or another dashboard surface.
- From the modal you can call the Dashboard SDK and other Wix APIs. To open and close the modal, see [Build a Dashboard Modal in Studio Two](https://dev.wix.com/docs/studio-two/code-your-site/build-a-custom-dashboard/dashboard-modals/build-a-dashboard-modal-in-studio-two.md).
