Forward Logs to an OpenTelemetry Endpoint in Studio Two

Forward your site's logs to an OpenTelemetry endpoint to keep them for longer than 24 hours, or to analyze them alongside logs from your other systems. Wix sends a copy of each new log entry to every enabled logs endpoint on the Signal Forwarding page. The entries also stay on the Logs page for 24 hours.

Note: Studio Two doesn't have the Google Cloud Logs or external logging tool connections that Wix Editor and Wix Studio have. Signal Forwarding sends your logs to any tool that accepts OpenTelemetry over HTTP.

You need an OpenTelemetry collector, or a logging service that accepts OpenTelemetry logs over HTTP. Get its logs endpoint URL, and an authorization header if the endpoint requires one. Wix sends entries with the OpenTelemetry Protocol over HTTP, encoded as protobuf and compressed with gzip.

Caution: Forwarded entries leave Wix. Make sure your code doesn't log passwords, API keys, tokens, or visitors' personal data.

Step 1 | Open the Signal Forwarding page

To open the Signal Forwarding page, do one of the following:

  • In the site dashboard, select Developer Tools > Signal Forwarding.
  • On the Logs page, click Forward Logs.
  • In the Studio Two editor, open the Code tab, click Developer Tools on the left edge, and select Signal Forwarding.

Step 2 | Add an endpoint

Add the endpoint that receives your logs. A site can have up to ten endpoints.

To add an endpoint:

  1. On the Signal Forwarding page, click Add Endpoint.
  2. In the Add endpoint panel, under Signal, select Logs.
  3. In Name, enter a name that identifies the endpoint, such as the collector's environment.
  4. In Endpoint URL, enter the full URL of your endpoint's logs path. For example, "https://collector.example.com/v1/logs". Wix sends entries to this exact URL and doesn't add /v1/logs.
  5. If your endpoint requires authorization, enter the header in Authorization header name and Authorization header value. For example, enter Authorization as the name and Bearer <your-token> as the value.
  6. Click Save Endpoint.

Step 3 | Check that entries arrive

To check that forwarding works:

  1. Run code that writes a log entry. See Write Log Messages in Studio Two.
  2. Check your collector or logging service for the entry.

Each forwarded entry is an OpenTelemetry log record. It has the same message, severity, timestamps, attributes, and resource attributes as the entry on the Logs page. Wix also adds your site ID and app ID to the record's resource attributes, as wix.site.id and wix.app.id. The createdDate, appId, and siteId fields appear only on the Logs page. For the fields of a Logs page entry, see Log Entry Structure in Studio Two.

If entries don't arrive

If your collector or logging service doesn't receive entries, check the following:

  • Endpoint URL is the full URL of your endpoint's logs path. For example, "https://collector.example.com/v1/logs". Wix doesn't add /v1/logs to the URL.
  • Authorization header name and Authorization header value match what your endpoint expects.
  • The endpoint is enabled on the Signal Forwarding page.
  • Your endpoint accepts the OpenTelemetry Protocol over HTTP, with entries encoded as protobuf and compressed with gzip.
  • Your code wrote an entry after you saved the endpoint. Wix forwards only new entries.

Manage your endpoints

The Signal Forwarding page lists your endpoints. To show only logs or only traces endpoints, use the filter at the top of the list.

From the list, you can edit, disable, enable, or delete an endpoint. A disabled endpoint keeps its settings but doesn't receive entries.

Forward traces

Signal Forwarding can also send traces of your backend requests, which is the data behind the Monitoring page. To forward traces, add an endpoint with Traces selected under Signal, and enter your endpoint's traces URL. For example, "https://collector.example.com/v1/traces".
