# Introduction

An avatar is a thumbnail representation of an entity, 
such as a user or an organization. An avatar can hold 
an image, name initials, or a placeholder image. 

If the avatar represents a logged-in member with a defined avatar image, the image displays. Otherwise, the member's initials display.
If the avatar represents a site visitor that hasn't logged in (meaning, an anonymous user), the placeholder image displays. 

> **Note**: If for any reason an image isn't accessible, either the initials or the placeholder image displays.
