# About the Services API

The Bookings Services API allows you to create, manage, and retrieve the
services a business offers to customers. Businesses can offer appointment-based
services, classes, and courses. Each service defines its price, when events
take place, how long they last, where they take place, which staff can provide
them and which booking policies exist. For example, the latest time customers
can book, and whether they can reschedule or cancel.

With the Services API, you can:

- Create services.
- Manage services.
- Retrieve and count services.

A service is an online or in-person offering that a business provides to its
customers.

### Service examples

A fitness studio may offer the following services:
- 1-hour Pilates class every Monday and Thursday.
- 30-minute 1-on-1 personal training.
- Course to become a yoga instructor 3 times a week from August to December.

A hair salon may offer these services:
- 30-minute haircut appointments.
- 2-hour hair coloring appointments.
- Course to become a hair stylist every weekday from January to March.

### Service types

Wix Bookings supports 3 different types of services:

- **Appointments**: An appointment is a 1-time event that a customer can book
  at a time of their choice during the business hours.  
  For example, a 30-minute haircut.
- **Classes**: A class is a single event or a series of recurring events that
  multiple customers can book. Classes may continue indefinitely, without a
  pre-defined end date. Events may take place on different days of the week, at
  different times, and with different resources, such as staff members.
  Customers can book a single or multiple events.  
  For example, a beginners Cross Fit class every Monday at 8\:00 PM and every
  Wednesday at 7\:00 PM. Customers can join session of their choice without
  committing to attend all sessions.
- **Courses**: A course starts and ends on pre-defined dates with a limited
  number of events that multiple customers can book. In contrast to classes,
  customers must book the entire course and can't book individual events.  
  For example, a once-a-week 12-event introductory course to Pilates, starting
  on February 1st and ending on March 17th.

# Services: Sample Use Cases and Flows

This article share a possible use case your code could support, as well as a
sample flow supporting it. This can be a helpful jumping off point as you plan
your implementation.

## Export new services to an external catalog

If the business manages their services in an external catalog, you can
periodically export new services from Wix to the external catalog.

To export services:

1. For the first export, call Query Services
   ([SDK](portalId::b85dea5b-341b-493b-b99e-4d4ca12baaa2resourceId::d1c98af6-5ad1-4df4-a38f-0b67797af4d4slug::query-services*fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/sdk/backend-modules/bookings/services/query-services) | [REST](portalId::d1972c09-74e2-4d36-a6f2-54e3310d4ad9resourceId::3a59c678-3a72-4e59-9368-4843f3cb3a7dslug::query-services*fallback::https://dev.wix.com/api/rest/wix-bookings/services-v2/query-services))
   without specifying any filters to retrieve all services. By default the
   initial paging limit is `100`.
1. Optional: If you've received 100 services, there may be additional services.
   Call Query Services again, specifying `100` as `paging.offset`. Continue
   retrieving services while increasing the offset, until you've retrieved all
   services.
1. Upload the retrieved services to the external catalog.
1. Save the request's date and time to use it as filter in your next query.
1. When it's time for the next export, call Query Services. Save the request's
   date and time. Specify this `filter:

# About Service Types: Appointments, Classes and Courses

Wix Bookings supports 3 types of services: appointment-based, classes, and
courses. Depending on business needs, you can set up services for all or only
the relevant types.

## Appointments

Appointments allow customers to book services at their preferred time during the
business hours. For example, a hair salon might offer different appointment-based
hair cutting and styling services. Appointments appear in the booking calendar once
they're booked by a customer. Not-yet-booked times during the business hours
are displayed as available slots to potential customers while booking.

### Varied service durations

You can use the *Service Options And Variants API*
([SDK](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/sdk/backend-modules/bookings/service-options-and-variants/introduction) | [REST](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/rest/business-solutions/bookings/services/service-options-and-variants/introduction))
to set different session durations for the same appointment-based service. For

### Buffers between sessions

You can configure a service so that it ensures buffer times between appointments.
For example, you can specify a 10-minute buffer between appointments for a hair

## Classes

A class is a single event or a series of recurring events that multiple customers
can book. For example, a yoga studio might offer a twice-weekly vinyasa flow
class. Classes may have a set end date or continue indefinitely. If a class
includes more than a single event, customers can sign up for 1, several, or all
of the events. Upon creation, classes are listed immediately in the booking
calendar.

A course starts and ends on pre-defined dates with a limited number of events
that multiple customers can book. For example, a yoga studio might offer a
teacher training course with 5 events. In contrast to classes, customers must
book the entire course. Upon creation, courses are displayed immediately in the
booking calendar.

## Update a service type

You can update a service's `type` if there are no upcoming events with
participants, but it's recommended to create a new service instead.

deletes the service’s existing schedule and creates a new one.

# About Service Slugs

In the context of Wix Bookings, a slug is a user-friendly and unique identifier
assigned to each service. It is designed to be easily readable and consists only
of lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens.

## Default slugs

When a service is created, Wix Bookings automatically calculates its `mainSlug`
based on the service name. Any non-alphanumeric character from the service name
is replaced with a hyphen, then consecutive hyphens are removed. If the
resulting slug would be empty or a single hyphen, it's set to `untitled` instead.

### Sample default slugs

The following table shows some sample default slugs.

### Service name changes

When a service's name changes, Wix Bookings automatically updates `mainSlug`,
unless the service has a custom slug. All past slugs and the current slug are
stored in `service.supportedSlugs`.

## Custom slugs

You can customize a service's slug, for example for SEO purposes. Like default
slugs, custom slugs may include only lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens.

### Set a custom slug

You can call *Set Custom Slug*

doesn't automatically update `mainSlug` whenever the service name changes.
Instead, it adds a default slug based on the new service name to the
`service.supportedSlugs` array.

### Validate a custom slug

You can check if a custom slug contains only supported characters, and isn't
associated with a different service by calling *Validate Slug*

# About Service Payments

You can offer services for free, allow customers to pay online when booking, or
in-person during the event.

## Service rates

The following service `rateTypes` are supported.

- __No Fee__: Customers can book for free. Even though the service is free, you
  must allow either in-person or online payments when creating the service.
- __Fixed__: The service price is fixed and doesn't change. When specifying a
  fixed service rate, you must set `payment.fixed.price.value` to a value greater
  than `0.00`.
- __Varied rate__: The service price depends on which
  _service variant_
  ([SDK](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/sdk/backend-modules/bookings/service-options-and-variants/introduction) | [REST](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/rest/business-solutions/bookings/services/service-options-and-variants/introduction))
  the customer chooses. For example, how long the appointment lasts, the
  participant's age, or which staff provides the service.
- __Custom rate__: The service price isn't defined by a specific numerical
  value but as a descriptive string, such as "Donation", or "Contact us for pricing
  information". You must allow in-person payments when setting a custom rate.

## Payment options

The service's `payment.options` determine how customers can pay. The following
payment options are available.

- __Online payments__: Customers can pay online when booking the service. It's
  recommended to allow online payments, since this significantly reduces
  no-shows.
- __In-person__: Customers can pay in-person during the event.
- __Deposits__: Customers must pay a deposit when booking the service. If the
  service requires a deposit, make sure to:
  - Allow online payments.
  - Also allow in-person payments, if the deposit is less than the full price.
  - Specify the deposit amount in either `payment.fixed.deposit.value` or
    `payment.varied.deposit.value` based on the rate type.
- __Pricing plans__: Customers can pay with a membership when booking the
  service. If you accept _pricing plans_
   ([SDK](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/sdk/backend-modules/pricing-plans/plans/introduction) | [REST](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/rest/business-solutions/pricing-plans/pricing-plans/introduction))
  as payments, you must allow online payments and add specific pricing plan IDs
  as `service.payment.pricingPlanIds`.

You must allow either in-person or online payments for every service, even if
it's free.

  Use the *Site Properties* API to manage the default business location, while
  using the *Locations* API to manage all other, additional business locations.
  Currently, all business locations must have the same opening hours.
- **Custom**: A location that's associated with the business but not managed via
  the *Site Properties* or *Locations* API. For example, you could use custom
  locations to manage one-off changes for a specific class session.
- **Customer**: A location that's defined by the customer while booking. For
  example, their home or office. Customer locations are supported for
  appointment-based services only, they aren't available for classes and
  courses. Wix doesn't validate customer locations.

## Staff member availability

When a business has multiple business locations, each staff member is set to
work at all business locations by default. You can limit staff member availability
by creating different `WORKING_HOURS` events for each location with the Events API
([SDK](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/sdk/backend-modules/calendar/events/introduction) | [REST](fallback::https://dev.wix.com/docs/rest/business-management/calendar/events-v3/introduction)).
