# About the Semantic Model API

The Semantic Model API provides access to semantic models that define the analytics data available for a Wix site. Each semantic model describes a specific analytics subject area (such as site traffic or revenue) and specifies the measures, dimensions, and parameters you can use to query it.

With the Semantic Model API, you can:

- Retrieve a list of all semantic models available for a site.
- Inspect a semantic model's schema to discover its available measures, dimensions, and parameters.
- Query semantic model data with filters, sorting, and pagination to retrieve site analytics.

## Before you begin

It's important to note the following points before starting to code:

- Every query requires a time interval (`interval`). You can't query semantic model data without specifying a date range.
- Field names used in queries must match the names returned by `Get Semantic Model`. Call `Get Semantic Model` first to discover available field names.
- Some semantic model fields depend on other fields, listed in the field's `dependencies` property in the `Get Semantic Model` response. The field returns data only if at least one of its listed dependencies is also included in the query; otherwise it's silently omitted from results. For example, a measure might only return data when a specific dimension is also in the query.
- A single query can return up to 1,000 rows. Use pagination to retrieve larger datasets.
- By default, the API returns field values as raw typed values. Set `formattingEnabled` to `true` in your query to also receive a human-readable string for each value—for example, `1500` formatted as `"$1,500.00"`.

This article presents possible use cases and corresponding sample flows. It provides a useful starting point for planning an implementation.

## Display site performance data on a dashboard

This flow shows analytics data (such as sessions and revenue) on a custom dashboard. It discovers which semantic models are available, inspects the semantic model schema to find the right fields, and then retrieves the data.

Before the flow runs, the dashboard has nothing to show—for example, an empty chart or a loading state.

To display site performance data on a dashboard:

1. Call `List Semantic Models` to retrieve all available semantic models and their IDs, to populate a model picker.
1. Identify the model relevant to the use case from the returned list.

This flow generates a report showing analytics data for a specific time period, along with aggregated totals for the full period. For example, both a daily revenue breakdown and the overall total revenue.

Before the flow runs, the report view is empty—no rows and no totals.

To build a custom analytics report with aggregated totals:

1. Call `List Semantic Models` to retrieve all available semantic models and their IDs, to populate a model picker.
1. Identify the model relevant to the report's subject area from the returned list.
1. Call `Get Semantic Model` with the model's ID to inspect its available measures, dimensions, and parameters and display them.
1. Identify the measures and dimensions relevant to the report from the model's schema.
1. Call `Query Semantic Model Data` with the relevant field names, a time interval, sorting, pagination, and `totalsIncluded` set to `true`.
1. Use the `results` array for the row-by-row data breakdown and the `totals` field for the aggregated sum across the full (unpaginated) result set. The report then shows the per-row breakdown and a totals row.
